After the launch of the National Logistics Policy, infrastructure appears to be Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s next target as he is scheduled to address a meeting of all mayors of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today, 20 September. He also hinted at the possibility of discussion on this issue in the meeting, as he tweeted about increasing urbanization and the need to build futuristic and modern cities according to the needs of the future.
“Tomorrow September 20 at 10:30 am, will address the meeting of all Mayors of @BJP4India. With increasing urbanization, it is important that we see this as an opportunity and work together towards building modern, futuristic cities.”
India has the second largest urban population in the world and by 2050 almost half of the country’s population will live in urban areas. Keeping this in mind, the government has launched several initiatives to promote rapid development of urban infrastructure in the country.
The Smart Cities Mission launched in 2016 is the flagship scheme of the government related to urban areas. It plans to develop and raise the standard of living of the people in 100 major cities of the country.
Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) was planned along with Smart Cities Mission and targeted around 500 cities in the country. It aims to transform parts of India into efficient urban places with at least good infrastructure facilities like access to proper water for drinking and other purposes, open spaces like parks, pollution free environment etc.
Today’s meeting with party mayors will come three days after the launch of the National Logistics Policy, which promises to cater to all stakeholders in the country’s fragmented logistics landscape.
The objective of the logistics policy is to reduce the logistics cost and bring it at par with the developed world. It also aims to improve the country’s rank in the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) ranking and aims to bring India among the top 25 countries.
To ensure an effective logistics ecosystem, the policy is also planning to create a data-driven decision support system.
